Product News: Micromachining

The Model 310-S 3-axis micromilling machine from Microlution Inc. is for producing prototype and low-volume parts under 2½". The working volumes for the X, Y and Z axes are 2½" each. The machine, which costs less than $90,000, features a 160,000-rpm air-powered spindle, granite support structures, open-architecture CNC, and both AC linear motors and Heidenhain linear optical encoders on the X, Y and Z stages. The positioning accuracy is 1 micron, the resolution is 0.02 microns, and the maximum acceleration is 5G.

Designed for single part and small series production, the KERN Micro machine stands on a stable polymer concrete base providing maximum rigidity and extraordinary vibration absorption.

Fielding Manufacturing, Cranston, R.I., manufactures precision, miniature zinc die cast and plastic injection molded components for a variety of industries. Founded in 1962, the company offers services from rapid prototyping of production parts, part design assistance for manufacturability, tool design and building, and production parts manufacturing. It also performs plating, coating and stamping of parts.

Kamlakar Rajurkar, a professor in the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska, agreed that sinker EDMing is the preferred method for creating micromolds. “Sinker EDMing, because of its ability to generate sharp corners and machine hard materials, is a predominant micromold machining technology. It is widely used either as a stand-alone technology or in combination with other technologies.”

Unlike its predecessor—the Royal Heavy-Duty Rota-Rack—the new Royal Econo-Rack is said to be a low-cost alternative for companies that want to run lights out, but don't require a large payload capacity, according to a news release issued by Royal Products, Hauppauge, N.Y.

GF AgieCharmilles

GF AgieCharmilles, Lincolnshire, Ill., offers the CUT 2000 and CUT 3000 wire-cutting EDM machines with an optional third-generation automatic wire changer.

Teem Photonics

California-based Teem Photonics recently unveiled a faster, colder version of its passively Q-Switched PicoSpark short-pulse laser family. Intended for micromachining and precision marking, the PicoSpark is said to have a 25 percent higher repetition rate and 25 percent shorter pulse compared to previous versions.
