Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal has added a range of coated high performance micro drills that the company says can produce precise holes as small as 30µm-dia. in a wide variety of materials.

The company’s new offerings in its MultiDrills series are the MDUS, is available in diameters between 0.03mm and 0.19mm and is coated with Sumitomo’s ultra-thin, long life TiAIN wear resistant surface; and the MDSS in sizes from 0.2mm to 1mm have the super lattice ZX TiN/AIN ultra-hard physical vapor deposition coating.

The micro drill series can be applied to a wide range of materials including copper, carbon steels, alloy and die steels as well as stainless steels with full application support from Sumitomo.

The MDUS drill has a 120° point angle and a very sharp cutting edge with a 30° helix. It is ground to a precise tolerance of 0.003mm, maintaining a concentricity within 0.3µm and a roundness within 0.5µm TIR. Flute lengths offered are between 0.3mm and 1.8mm.

The ultra-fine coating enables high surface finishes to be attained and prevents built up edge when swarf becomes welded to the drill point and fluting, the company claims. The shank diameter is 3mm across the range.

There are two new miro drill offerings from Sumitomo Microdrill (MDUS and MDSS) with sizes between 0.03mm and 1mm-dia.
